New COVID-19 Case Confirmed in Cross River State, Nigeria

On Tuesday, during a press briefing in Calabar, Dr. Henri Ayuk, the state commissioner for health, disclosed that a 53-year-old Chinese national working for Lafarge has tested positive for COVID-19 in Cross River State.

The patient arrived in Nigeria on March 17 and began to show symptoms on April 10, which worsened, leading to a transfer to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH). Samples were taken following standard protocols, and the case was later confirmed.

Dr. Ayuk emphasized that there is no cause for alarm as surveillance and containment measures are in place.

The last confirmed COVID-19 case in Cross River State was in 2022, suggesting that the current infection may have been contracted within Nigeria. Dr.

Inyang Ekpenyong, the state epidemiologist, noted that contact tracing is underway. The World Health Organization's Dr.

Yewand Olatund urged residents to maintain preventive measures to protect themselves.
