Senate Mourns Rivers South-East Senator Barinada Mpigi

The Nigerian Senate expressed its condolences following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East. Mpigi, aged 64, passed away after a brief illness.

He served in the 10th National Assembly and was the chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, overseeing federal road infrastructure projects. His political career began in the House of Representatives, where he was first elected in 2011 and re-elected in 2016 before moving to the Senate in 2019 on the platform of the People's Democratic Party.

During the 9th Assembly, he chaired the joint Senate committee investigating crude oil theft in the Niger Delta, playing a critical role amid declining oil revenue and rampant pipeline vandalism. His passing was acknowledged during a budget defense session, with Senator Moham Onawo of Nasarawa South paying tribute.

Colleagues observed a minute of silence in his honor, with Akin Alabi, chairman of the House Committee on Works, also expressing condolences.
