Nigerian Senate Suspends Discussion on US Airstrikes Over Security Concerns

The Nigerian Senate has halted open discussions on US airstrikes carried out in Sokoto State on December 25. Senate President Godswill Akpabio ruled that the security matter should not be debated publicly due to its sensitive nature.

Lawmakers were urged to avoid public arguments on national security issues. Senator Abdul Ningi raised legal concerns over the airstrikes, emphasizing the need for proper legislative involvement in foreign military operations on Nigerian soil.

The controversy arose following US President Donald Trump's announcement of airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in northwest Nigeria. The Nigerian government confirmed the strikes but emphasized targeting extremist hideouts.

The Senate awaits a full briefing from security agencies in a closed session to understand the scope of Nigeria's involvement and the legal basis for the operations.
