Senator Kalu Calls for Mandatory Drug Tests for Nigerian Pilots Over Safety Concerns

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has urged the Nigerian aviation authorities to conduct mandatory drug tests for pilots to ensure air safety, citing concerns over pilots operating flights under the influence of drugs, including Indian hemp. Kalu accused the NCAA of negligence and poor oversight, referencing incidents like the Air Peace Boeing 737-500 mishap.

He emphasized the importance of aviation safety for national security and economic growth. Kalu also highlighted the need for regular spot checks and health assessments for pilots to prevent unfit individuals from flying.

The Senate mandated the NCAA to enhance compliance with safety standards and conduct routine safety audits across airports.
