N1bn Budget for Church Instruments in Abia Explained

Hon. Ben Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and member representing Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, explained that N1 billion earmarked in the 2026 budget is intended for a Youth Re-orientation and Social Support Programme delivered through faith-based organizations. He clarified that the actual allocation is N780 million after VAT and other deductions.

The initiative targets 130 churches across Bende's 13 electoral wards, providing approximately 5 to 6 million Naira per church. The program aims to equip churches with evangelical instruments and public address systems to enhance youth engagement, promote community outreach, and combat issues such as narcotics, sexual offences, and violent crimes.

Kalu emphasized that this approach is not new, as faith-based organizations in other regions have invested in youth development, but it is a strategy that has not been widely adopted in the South East.
