Kano Governor Abba Yusuf to Defect from NNPP to APC, Ending Kwankwaso Alliance

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf is set to defect from the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in January 2026, severing ties with his longtime benefactor Rabiu Kwankwaso. Yusuf aims to strengthen his political control in Kano State by securing the support of APC members and key legislators.

The defection plan has already caused a rift within the NNPP, with some lawmakers reportedly in support of Yusuf's move. Additionally, the proposed defection could lead to the impeachment of Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam and the emergence of Murtala Sule Garo as the APC's 2023 deputy governorship candidate.
