Okwu-Kanu Family Demands Appeal Hearing for Nnamdi Kanu

The Okwu-Kanu Family has called for a hearing regarding the appeal of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), challenging the legal basis for his conviction and sentence by the Federal High Court. Prince Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi's younger brother, urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate Justice James Omotosho's conduct during the trial.

The family contends that Justice Omotosho stated in court on 4 November 2025 that “no written law, no conviction” before convicting Kanu on 20 November 2025. They argue that Kanu's conviction was based on repealed terrorism legislation and that the trial court failed to address the transition to the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act (TPPA) 2022.

The family also raised concerns about fair hearing rights, claiming Kanu was not allowed to make a final address before judgment and was not given proper sentencing procedures. They questioned the legal implications of the Court of Appeal's decision on 13 October 2022, which discharged Kanu and the subsequent Supreme Court order for the continuation of proceedings.
