IPOB Accuses FG of Delaying Nnamdi Kanu's Appeal Hearing

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the Federal Government of Nigeria of failing to file its response to the appeal against the conviction of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. In a statement by spokesperson Emma Powerful, IPOB claimed that the time allowed for the Federal Government to respond had expired, with no brief filed in the appeal.

They criticized the Court of Appeal for not listing the case for hearing, alleging that this denies Kanu the opportunity to challenge his conviction. IPOB argued that Kanu was convicted under a repealed law and that the trial should have proceeded under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022.

They also criticized Justice James Omotosho for not applying the 2022 Act's provisions. IPOB stated that the Federal Government's failure to respond strengthens their argument that the conviction cannot withstand legal scrutiny and called for the appeal to be listed and heard.
