Kebbi Governor Idris Replaces Deputy with New 2027 Running Mate

Nasir Idris, Governor of Kebbi State, unveiled Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad Augie as his running mate for the 2027 gubernatorial contest. The announcement took place Sunday at Birnin Kebbi's Presidential Lodge during a visit by Argungu Emirate stakeholders offering thanks to the governor.
Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad Argungu, the All Progressives Congress National Organising Secretary, delivered the statement. Removing Senator Umar Tafida, the sitting Deputy Governor, from the ticket was grounded in professional legal advice touching on his eligibility for office.
Tafida was made aware of and consented to this decision, according to statements released by state officials. No friction exists between the governor and his deputy, sources confirm.
With this change, the APC appears positioned to settle its gubernatorial slate before the 2027 electoral cycle commences. Augie's elevation constitutes a notable realignment in Kebbi's political sphere as the state gears toward forthcoming elections.
On Sunday, the state government's social media accounts shared news of the appointment, aiming to reach voters and party faithful through direct digital communication. Swapping out a sitting deputy governor before their tenure ends marks an uncommon occurrence in Nigeria's political sphere.
Constitutional or legal obstacles typically trigger such replacements. As second-in-command of the state, Tafida now departs the gubernatorial slate.
Governor Idris proceeds with redesigned political succession arrangements moving forward.
