Clerics in Politics: Gumi Advocates for Active Involvement

The involvement of clerics in politics has become a contentious issue among Muslims in northern Nigeria. Notable figures include Sheikh Isah Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, and Sheikh Bashir Ahmad Sani, who announced his candidacy for the governorship of Gombe State in the upcoming 2027 general election.

Critics argue that politics is too divisive for religious leaders, while supporters contend that clerics should not remain passive as the country faces poor leadership. They believe that scholars with the requisite knowledge and integrity should seek elective offices.

Gumi expressed his view on Facebook, stating that clerics participating in politics is preferable to merely praying for politicians from a distance. He emphasized that a religious scholar who engages in the political process is more beneficial than one who only prays.
