Kekere-Ekun Urges ECOWAS Court on Judgment Enforcement

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, challenged the ECOWAS Court to establish guidelines that would facilitate the enforcement of its judgments across member states. This statement was made during a meeting in Abuja on Monday, where she hosted a delegation led by ECOWAS Court President Ricardo Goncalv.

According to a statement from her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Tobi Soniyi, Goncalv's team expressed concern over the lack of political will, noting that about 80 percent of the court's judgments remain unenforced. Goncalv urged Nigeria to set an example by enforcing the court's judgments, which would encourage other member states to follow suit.

In response, Kekere-Ekun commended the ECOWAS Court for its landmark judgments and stressed the importance of enforcing these decisions to protect fundamental human rights in the sub-region. She advised the court to consult widely with stakeholders to revise existing enforcement guidelines and pledged support for the ECOWAS Court in training initiatives for the Nigerian Judiciary Institute.
