CJN Urges ECOWAS Court to Create Enforcement Guidelines

On Tuesday, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, called on the ECOWAS Court to establish guidelines that would facilitate the enforcement of its judgments. This statement was made during a meeting in Abuja with a delegation from the ECOWAS Court, led by its President, Justice Ricardo Goncalves.

Justice Kekere-Ekun highlighted that approximately 80% of the court's judgments remain unenforced due to a lack of political will among member states. She urged Nigeria to set an example by enforcing these judgments, which would encourage other member states to follow suit.

The Chief Justice commended the ECOWAS Court for its landmark judgments that uphold fundamental human rights in the sub-region and recognized the importance of enforcing these judgments. She suggested that the court use this opportunity to develop uniform procedures for enforcement during bilateral meetings with member states.
