Asaba Airport Missed Landing Sparks Upgrade Discussions

A new aircraft recently missed its landing at Asaba Airport, leading to its diversion due to operational constraints. This incident has ignited conversations across Delta State regarding the airport's capacity and the necessity for upgrades.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has urged for the airport to be developed into an international aviation hub, emphasizing its strategic potential to connect Nigeria's South East and South South regions. Asaba Airport is positioned to serve a growing population of ten million Nigerians and facilitate international travel, which is currently hindered by long road journeys to other airports.

The airport's infrastructure is under pressure due to increasing passenger volumes, necessitating an expansion of its handling systems and runway. Keyamo's proposal aims to attract domestic and international airlines, enhance cargo facilities, and support agricultural exports, which are vital for the economic integration and growth of Delta State.
