Rising Kidney Disease Cases in North East Nigeria Alarm Experts

Health experts have raised alarms about the rising incidence of kidney disease in North East Nigeria, particularly affecting one in every thirty people in the subregion. Dr. Ali Razak, a pediatric nephrologist, initiated a free screening program in collaboration with the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and the Nigeria Association of Nephrology to promote early detection and prevent chronic kidney conditions.

The program aims to educate residents about the risks associated with kidney disease, which include hypertension, diabetes, and lifestyle factors. Dr. Moham Rabi U.

Garba linked the increase in cases to poor lifestyle habits, environmental exposure, and the misuse of herbal medications. The outreach, coordinated by Alhaji Aliyu Isiyaku, is designed to improve access to screening and raise public awareness.

Although the cost of dialysis has decreased to N12,000 per session, kidney care remains expensive, with 70-80% of patients suffering from underlying conditions. Experts urge regular check-ups and adequate hydration to curb the rising trend.
