Kogi State Bans Graduation Ceremonies in Schools to Ease Financial Burdens

The Kogi State Government has banned frequent graduation ceremonies in basic and secondary schools, as well as signing-out ceremonies in tertiary institutions. The Commissioner of Education, Wemi Jones, stated that these ceremonies have become economically unsustainable and put undue financial pressure on parents.

A new policy requires parents to provide separate notebooks for classwork instead of using textbooks, aiming to reduce costs and promote meaningful recognition of student achievements. The ban is part of efforts to enforce the Kogi State Education Law enacted in 2020.

The government seeks stakeholder support for the smooth implementation of these new policies to alleviate financial burdens on parents and enhance educational standards.
