Kogi School Attack: 17 Pupils Rescued, 9 Still Captive

On Saturday, at approximately 11:45 PM, gunmen invaded Daarul Kitab School, an Islamic institution located in Zariagi, Kogi State, abducting a total of 26 individuals, which included 24 pupils and two wives of the proprietor. ASP Saliu Afusat from the Kogi State Police Public Relations Office reported that a joint security team was mobilized, leading to the rescue of 17 victims.

The operation is ongoing to secure the release of the remaining nine victims. Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Nazir Kankarofi, visited the scene and ordered the deployment of tactical teams to comb the bush for the captives while gathering intelligence.

Kogi State Government, represented by Kingsley Femi Fanwo, condemned the attack, labeling it unfortunate and highlighting concerns regarding the operation of unregistered schools in remote areas, which pose serious security risks. Kidnapping for ransom remains a significant security challenge in Nigeria, particularly affecting religious institutions in rural communities.
