Cashless Policy to Enhance Nigerian Airports' Development

Mr. Kuku, the Managing Director and CEO of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), emphasized that the full implementation of a cashless policy at airports will significantly boost infrastructure development.

The initiative aims to enhance revenue collection, with the actual introduction of the cashless policy starting on March 1, 2026. FAAN has already registered 100,000 customers, with 62,000 transactions completed in the first three days of the pilot phase.

The cashless policy is expected to alleviate congestion and improve the passenger experience at major airports, particularly in Lagos and Abuja. Mr.

Kuku noted that the policy aligns with federal government directives to reduce cash-based activities and improve operational efficiency. He highlighted the need for broader infrastructural improvements to support this transition, including increasing payment channels and enhancing the business environment to drive passenger traffic.

The ultimate goal is to position Nigerian airports as competitive hubs in Africa, similar to Cairo and Johannesburg.
