Scholar Criticizes US Bill Targeting Nigerian Politician for Religious Persecution

Farooq Kperogi, a Nigerian scholar, highlighted the singling out of Nigerian politician Kwankwaso in a US bill due to his alleged involvement in religious persecution in Nigeria. Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, has faced criticism for enabling religious persecution through the implementation of Sharia law during his tenure.

The bill, if passed, would require the US Department of State to submit a comprehensive report on efforts to address religious persecution in Nigeria, potentially imposing sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for severe violations of religious freedom. Kperogi criticized the personalization of US foreign policy decisions and emphasized the need for a more objective approach.

Additionally, the bill includes descriptions of entities like Macban and Miyetti Allah Kautal, highlighting concerns over Fulani militia activities in Nigeria. Gen. Dagvin Anderson confirmed the dispatch of US experts to Nigeria to assist in combating insecurity.
