Lawyer Urges Kwankwaso to Address Allegations Over US Sanctions Bill

A legal practitioner has urged former Kano State Governor, Kwankwaso, to publicly address allegations of involvement in religious freedom violations in Nigeria following the introduction of a US sanctions bill. The bill, titled the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act 2026 (HR 7457), aims to impose visa bans and asset freezes on certain individuals and groups, including Kwankwaso, for their alleged role in the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

The lawyer emphasized the need for Kwankwaso to clarify his position and address the allegations, citing the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. The bill was introduced by US lawmakers Chris Smith, Rilei Moor, Brian Mast, and Mario Diaz-Balart, targeting individuals and organizations contributing to religious persecution in Nigeria, including Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association.

Kwankwaso's inclusion in the list has raised questions, as there is no public record directly linking him to terror sponsorship. The lawyer highlighted the importance of protecting individuals' rights and reputations in the face of such allegations.
