Kwara Monarch and Scholar Address Muslim Divorce Rates

Oba Ismail Atoloye Alebiosu, the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, and Dr. Haruna Sanusi Lafiagi, an Orator at Al-Hikmah University, lamented the rising incidences of divorce among Muslim couples in Nigeria during the annual conference of Imams held in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area. They attributed the increase in divorces to a lack of premarital counseling and inadequate post-marriage follow-ups.

The conference, organized by Daarul-S Sa’aadah Islamic Centre, focused on the theme ‘Imams and the Muslim Home,’ with a lecture on the role of Imams in sustaining Muslim marriages. Oba Alebiosu emphasized the importance of post-marital follow-ups to monitor couples' well-being, stating that divorce should be a last resort.

He proposed establishing departments of marital counseling in central mosques to ensure effective premarital and post-marital support. Dr. Lafiagi highlighted the significant role of Imams in fostering peaceful and successful Muslim homes, reinforcing their duty to guide couples through the marriage process.
