Labour Party Supports Senate's State Police Bill Passage

The Labour Party (LP) welcomed the Senate's passage of the State Police Bill, describing it as a bold and patriotic step towards addressing Nigeria's growing security challenges. In a statement issued on Thursday by the party's National Public Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the LP commended the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, for its courageous and swift action in considering and passing the legislation, which will be transmitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The party noted that Nigerians across various geopolitical zones have long advocated for a responsive police system capable of tackling the nation's evolving security threats. The passage of the bill is seen as a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen internal security and bring law enforcement closer to local communities.

The LP acknowledged concerns regarding potential abuse of state-controlled police structures but argued that the current security realities justify the need for a decentralized police framework. The party expressed confidence that provisions in the bill would establish oversight mechanisms to ensure compliance with constitutional limits.

The LP urged state governors and members of various state houses of assembly to support the constitutional amendment process for the bill's approval.
