NLC Demands Minimum Wage Increase Amid Fuel Price Surge

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by Joe Ajaero, is advocating for a minimum wage increase to N154,000, reflecting a 120% rise in salaries due to escalating inflation and living costs. This demand arises as petrol prices have surged from N1,170 to N1,300 per liter, driven by geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The NLC's five-point intervention plan, titled "Save Nigerian Shock: Urgent Relief," seeks to address broader economic challenges beyond just wage increases. The plan includes proposals for cash transfer programs to vulnerable households and tax relief for low-income earners.

Despite the potential for Nigeria to earn an additional N30 trillion from higher oil prices, the country faces significant production challenges, including crude theft and pipeline vandalism, which limit its ability to benefit fully from these price increases. Analysts warn that petrol prices could rise further, potentially reaching N1,200 to N1,500 per liter, exacerbating the cost of living crisis for households.
