Lagos State Launches Electric Ferries for Water Transport

Lagos State is implementing an ambitious plan to transform its water transport system as part of its blue economy agenda. Mr.

Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Marine and Blue Economy, announced that the initiative will include dredging 140 kilometers of inland waterways and upgrading terminals to strengthen operational capacity across the sector. This project is designed to provide commuters with viable alternatives to road transport, thereby reducing traffic congestion in the state.

It marks the first time Lagos has attracted large-scale investment dedicated solely to water transport. The initiative also includes a focus on cleaner energy, with pilot schemes for electric ferries and ongoing efforts to convert conventional engines to compressed natural gas (CNG).

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) aims to enhance safety and reduce accidents through infrastructural investments. Current monthly passenger traffic is estimated at 1.5 to 2 million, and the government is committed to tackling marine pollution, particularly plastic waste, in collaboration with environmental agencies.
