Lagos 2050 Mobility Plan Focuses on Rail and Ferries

The Lagos State government has updated its 2050 mobility master plan, emphasizing a shift from road expansion to a multimodal transport system that prioritizes rail, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), and ferry services. This decision follows a high-level stakeholder workshop organized by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), which highlighted the need to tackle worsening congestion and improve connectivity in anticipation of the population reaching 45 million by 2050.

Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the state commissioner for transport, stated that reliance on road construction alone is insufficient to address transport challenges.

The revised strategy includes the expansion of rail services, enhancement of the BRT system, and the integration of ferry services into a cohesive transport network. Engr.

Mr. Abimbola Akinajo, LAMATA's managing director, noted that Lagos currently records 20 million daily trips, underscoring the demand for an efficient transport system.

The plan includes six proposed rail lines and aims to implement cleaner energy options for public transport.
