Lagos State Warns Residents of Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

On February 10, 2026, during a press briefing, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced that residents should prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flooding as the rainy season approaches. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency's seasonal climate predictions indicate an early onset of the rainy season, with above-normal rainfall expected from March to December.

Specific rainfall amounts are projected for various divisions within Lagos State, including 1,932mm for Ikeja and 2,010mm for Badagry. Wahab warned that the anticipated heavy rainfall could lead to flooding and strong winds, posing risks to lives and properties.

The state government is enhancing flood control measures, maintaining drainage systems, and collaborating with the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority to monitor water levels and prevent flooding. The government aims to keep residents informed and prepared for the rainy season's impacts.
