Lagos State Bans Unauthorized Chieftaincy Titles, Threatens Imprisonment

The Lagos State Government has issued a ban on unauthorized chieftaincy titles, warning citizens against assuming such titles without official approval. Bolaji Robert, representing the Lagos State Commission for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, disclosed this in a public notice on February 3, 2026.

The government declared that those violating the order will face arrest and prosecution under the Oba and Chiefs Law of Lagos State 2015. The government expressed concerns over the increasing number of self-acclaimed traditional rulers, leading to tensions and unnecessary crises.

This action is part of efforts to clarify the guidelines governing chieftaincy matters in Lagos State and to protect the sanctity of traditional institutions. The government had previously intervened legislatively in June 2025 to repeal and reenact the Oba and Chiefs Law, aiming to strengthen the authority of the governor in chieftaincy matters and introduce innovations in traditional leadership.

This move underscores the government's commitment to upholding the integrity of traditional institutions amidst modern administrative frameworks.
