Lagos Confirms 6 Diphtheria Cases, Assures No Outbreak

On Thursday, the Lagos State Government confirmed six laboratory-confirmed cases of diphtheria, with Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi stating there is no widespread outbreak in the state. This assurance was given during a briefing on diphtheria preparedness and response held in Alausa, Ikeja.

Abayomi noted that Lagos recorded 53 suspected cases in 2026 and is intensifying surveillance due to its high population and movement from affected areas. He urged residents to remain calm and take precautionary measures.

Those experiencing severe symptoms such as sore throat, fever, or difficulty swallowing should seek medical attention promptly. Abayomi highlighted immunization as the most effective prevention method, encouraging parents to ensure their children receive the three-dose pentavalent vaccine at six, 10, and 14 weeks.

Currently, Lagos has about 64 percent full vaccination coverage, with vaccines available free at over 1,000 public and private facilities. Four designated facilities for suspected cases include Mainland Hospital, Yaba; Massey Street Children’s Hospital; and LASUTH.

Dr. Dayo Lajide, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, reinforced the need for full vaccination of children.
