Lagos Enhances Diphtheria Preparedness Amid Risks

On 14 September 2026, the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Commissioner for Health Prof. Akin Abayomi, announced its proactive measures against diphtheria, emphasizing the state's vulnerability due to its density and mobility. As of epidemiological week 35 of 2026, Nigeria reported 16,184 suspected cases, 13,026 confirmed cases, and 365 deaths across 26 states.

Although Lagos is not a national hotspot, Abayomi warned that low case counts do not equate to low risk. The state is reviewing eight key areas for preparedness, including surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, clinical care, and vaccination, particularly targeting zero-dose and under-immunised children.

Abayomi stressed the importance of prompt clinical action for suspected cases and ensuring adequate supplies of diphtheria antitoxin and antibiotics. With schools reopening, collaboration with the education sector is deemed critical for effective surveillance.

The overarching goal is to ensure readiness before any new cases arise, as diphtheria is preventable through vaccination.
