Lagos State Arrests 46 in Open Defecation Crackdown

On February 20, 2022, Lagos State intensified its enforcement against open defecation, resulting in the arrest of 46 individuals during coordinated operations across various parts of Lagos Island. The Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, noted that these arrests were part of a routine sanitation monitoring effort targeting open defecation black spots, particularly in high-density commercial districts.

The enforcement team apprehended 20 offenders on February 20, followed by 15 suspects on February 21, and an additional 11 individuals on February 22. The suspects were subsequently transferred to the headquarters of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps in Oshodi for further investigation and prosecution under the state's environmental laws.

This initiative is part of the government's broader strategy to eliminate open defecation, protect public health, and strengthen environmental sanitation compliance across the metropolis, as open defecation poses a significant public health threat.
