Lagos Resumes Monthly Environmental Sanitation April 2026

The Lagos State Government announced the resumption of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, set to begin on Saturday, April 25, 2026. This initiative, announced by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, aims to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.

The exercise will take place on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM. The program had been suspended since November 2016 during the administration of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, following a court ruling that deemed the restriction of movement during sanitation hours as a violation of citizens' fundamental rights.

The current government began discussions in 2024 to reinstate the exercise due to increasing environmental concerns. However, it clarified that the reintroduction will not involve previous movement restrictions, instead encouraging voluntary participation from residents.

The government emphasized the importance of community cooperation in achieving a cleaner and flood-resilient city.
