Lagos State Enforces Laws for a Cleaner Environment

Lagos State is taking significant steps to address environmental issues under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Recent reports indicate that 17 residents have been arraigned and fined N40,000 for open defecation, with the option of one month imprisonment for non-payment.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has recorded 1,023 illegal waste dumping violations in 2025 alone, with 447 cases referred for prosecution. The state government emphasizes that the fight against environmental degradation is crucial for improving public health and attracting foreign investment.

The administration aims to change public behavior regarding waste management, as Lagos, with a population of 20 million, aspires to achieve global city status. The government is committed to enforcing laws against environmental offenses, highlighting that maintaining a clean city is essential for economic growth and public health.
