Lagos State Declares Emergency on Waste Management

On Wednesday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu declared a state of emergency on waste management across Lagos. This declaration occurred during his inspection of the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota, where he recognized that waste collection has significantly slowed in various areas of the state.

Sanwo-Olu attributed the waste management issues partly to the failure of some Private Sector Participation operators to fulfill their obligations. In response, the Lagos State Government is implementing immediate measures to enhance waste collection and disposal.

Waste compaction is currently taking place at both the Olusosun and Solous 3 dumpsites. Additionally, the government plans to increase the number of waste trucks and disposal points.

Sanwo-Olu urged residents to refrain from indiscriminate dumping while the government addresses the backlog of refuse, as the situation poses serious environmental and public health risks in parts of Lagos.
