Lagos Demolishes Shanties After Community Clash Deaths

The Lagos State Government initiated a controlled demolition of shanties and informal structures in the Ikola community, Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area, after a recent communal clash that left four individuals dead. This operation is coordinated by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in collaboration with the Lagos State Police Command and the Rapid Response Squad.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA's Permanent Secretary, stated that the demolition aims to address safety risks posed by structures built beneath high-voltage transmission lines. The communal clash between Hausa and Yoruba communities highlighted the dangers of informal settlements in the area.

Residents were given adequate notice to evacuate before the demolition commenced. The government emphasized that the operation is not targeting any ethnic group but is focused on eliminating a dangerous structural situation.

The demolition is being conducted in a controlled manner, with heavy recovery equipment deployed to remove the structures.
