Fear in Ikola Community After Shanty Demolitions

Fear has gripped residents of Ikola in the Agbado-Oke Odo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State after the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in collaboration with the police and Rapid Response Squad (RRS), demolished shanties and informal structures beneath high-tension electricity lines. This demolition occurred just two days after a communal clash that reportedly resulted in four deaths, escalating anxiety among residents about potential violence and displacement.

Mr. Adewale Omoboriola expressed the need for peace and urged the government to ensure security to prevent further violence. Mrs. Hauwa Ibrahim called for clarity regarding the relocation of displaced individuals, emphasizing the need for security measures.

The clash that preceded the demolition was reportedly triggered by a disagreement involving a tricycle rider and area boys over an alleged N200 demand, leading to buildings being set ablaze. Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA's permanent secretary, stated that residents were given adequate notice to evacuate before the demolition.
