Lagos Waste Management Crisis Leads to Flooding and Health Risks

The waste management crisis in Lagos has escalated, disrupting waste evacuation and contributing to severe flooding that has damaged properties across the region. Experts, including Mr.

Harrison Chinaka, attribute the accumulation of refuse to the limited access to existing dumpsites and the indiscriminate disposal of waste. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) reported that private sector participation is crucial for effective waste management, having licensed operators to evacuate 418,500 tons of waste, averaging 13,200 tons daily.

Chinaka warned that improper waste disposal poses serious public health risks, including the release of harmful substances and increased disease transmission. Residents in areas like Ikotun and Mushin have expressed frustration over the lack of consistent waste collection services, leading to open dumping and stagnant water, which can breed mosquitoes and other health hazards.

Dr. Olugbenga Adebola, President of the Waste Management Association of Nigeria, described the current situation as disturbing and emphasized the need for effective waste management solutions in Lagos.
