Lagos Expands Rail Network to 11 Lines with Training Center

The Lagos State Government has announced an expansion of its rail network to include 11 lines, alongside the establishment of a state-of-the-art railway training center. This initiative is part of the strategic transport master plan aimed at developing a skilled workforce necessary for the operation and maintenance of the expanding rail infrastructure.

Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), stated that the state has made significant progress in reducing reliance on foreign expertise, with 90% of staff on the Blue Line being local. The training center, developed in partnership with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), will focus on producing internationally competitive railway personnel.

Sun Xiangchun, Vice President of CCECC, described the project as a major milestone for strengthening the sustainability of Lagos's rail system. The initiative is expected to create meaningful employment opportunities for youth and contribute significantly to Nigeria's economic growth.
