Lagos Assembly Halts Makoko, Shogunle Construction Plans

The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered an immediate suspension of construction activities in the Makoko and Shogunle areas. This decision is pending the completion of reconciliation talks with affected residents, which are expected to occur within a two-week timeframe.

The Assembly endorsed a proposal submitted to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which includes a recommendation for a 250-meter setback from the Third Mainland Bridge, along with an additional 250-meter buffer beyond the power line corridor. The Assembly has instructed the Lagos State Building Control Agency to engage with the community through a 10-member committee, as explained by Noheem Adam, a representative of the Assembly.

This committee will include representatives from women, youth, students, and traditional leaders to ensure that residents' concerns are adequately addressed. Bayo Adefuy, the chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, welcomed the decision and noted that relief items have already been distributed.

He expressed optimism that the committee would complete its work within the proposed timeframe.
