Lagos State mandates health insurance by December 2026

The Lagos State Government has set a deadline of December 31, 2026, for residents to obtain mandatory health insurance, with enforcement commencing on January 1, 2027. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this policy in a statement from his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile.
This initiative, introduced under Executive Order EO/BOS/01 of 2024, aims to enhance healthcare access and alleviate the financial burden of medical expenses on households. Sanwo-Olu unveiled the Lagos Private Health Plans (LPHP), designed to extend coverage to salaried workers and corporate organizations, complementing the existing Ilera Eko scheme for vulnerable residents.
He emphasized that healthcare providers must stabilize patients needing emergency treatment before addressing payment issues. The Lagos State Government has increased its Health Equity Fund from N1 billion to N3 billion to cover over 500,000 vulnerable residents.
The policy follows a previous plan for enforcement in the third quarter of 2025 and is based on an executive order signed in July 2024.
