Lagos Island Celebrates Unity at 2026 Geled Festival

The Lagos Island Local Government hosted the 2026 Geled Festival, aimed at promoting unity and preserving cultural heritage. The festival took place at Ilupesi Ground on Owa Street, attracting residents, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts.

Chairman Taiwo Oyekan emphasized the need to preserve cultural heritage and promote unity within the community. The festival featured traditional performances, including masquerade displays and drum rituals, highlighting the historical identity of Lagos Island.

Oyekan described the event as significant for reinforcing community bonds and protecting indigenous traditions from extinction. The festival began on Friday, April 3, with an entertainment session at Oju Irowo Square, featuring music and dramatic performances that drew a large crowd.

Organizers noted that the festival continues to serve as a rallying point for cultural pride and social cohesion. Traditional ruler Alaketu Lamidi Adio praised the council chairman for supporting initiatives that sustain indigenous culture, while Mazeedat Raji remarked on the festival's role in strengthening Lagos Island's cultural identity and increasing its visibility on the global cultural stage.
