Lagos State to Deploy 100,000 Solar Home Systems

The Lagos State Government is initiating a mass migration to solar energy in response to persistent power outages. Biodun Ogunley, the state commissioner for energy and mineral resources, announced plans to deploy 100,000 solar home systems as part of a gradual transition away from the unreliable public power supply.

This initiative was discussed during the inauguration of a solar project at Radio Lagos Eko FM on Tuesday. Ogunley explained that the migration would not be abrupt but phased, allowing residents to subscribe to solar systems that will be financially comparable to their current electricity bills.

The project aims to address the urgent need for alternative energy sources in Nigeria, where reliance on diesel generators is costly, with the country spending approximately N16 trillion on diesel and petrol for self-generated electricity in 2023 alone. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance energy discipline among users and promote renewable energy solutions in Lagos.
