Lagos Secures $7.5M Flood Insurance for Residents

Lagos State has successfully secured a $7.5 million flood insurance policy aimed at protecting its 4 million residents from the impacts of flooding. This initiative, announced on Thursday, is part of a public-private partnership facilitated by the Insurance Development Forum (IDF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The policy is designed to provide relief to vulnerable communities when disasters strike, marking a significant milestone in the tripartite agreement involving the IDF, the Lagos State Government, and various insurance organizations, including AXA Climate, AXA Mansard Nigeria, and Swiss Re. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted the urgent need for such measures, noting that climate inaction could cost Lagos State approximately $40 billion by 2050.

The collaboration aims to develop flood risk products and strengthen the resilience of developing countries against climate risks. The initiative also includes plans to create blue-green networks to manage rainwater effectively and prevent drainage system overload during heavy rainfall.
