Lagos State Serves 1.5 Million Residents with Water Access

Lagos State has disclosed that 1.5 million residents are actively served by its public water system, which accounts for 44% of the population. This information was provided by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in an exclusive interview with Nairametrics.

The Minister explained that the 44% figure refers to residents with physical access to the water network, although not all have household taps. Areas currently served include Akilo, Parkview Estate, Lekki 1, and Abesan.

The Minister clarified that residents living near main pipelines require last-mile connections to ensure consistent access to water. Ongoing projects aim to expand access to potable water across Lagos, with rehabilitation work on the Iju and Adiyan Akut intake capacity expected to reach completion by August 2026.

This project is anticipated to significantly increase the efficiency of the state's water distribution network. The Lagos State government continues to expand water infrastructure, although residents already connected to the network sometimes face supply interruptions due to maintenance and repair issues.
