Lagos Shuts 827 Construction Sites to Prevent Collapses

The Lagos State Government has taken significant measures to address the recurring issue of building collapses by shutting down 827 construction sites over the past year. Engr Olayinka Abdul, speaking at a press briefing on Monday, disclosed that this action is part of an enforcement campaign aimed at ensuring compliance with construction safety regulations.

The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) has adopted a technology-driven approach to quality control, moving beyond traditional testing methods to identify and address infractions that lead to building failures. During the review period, the agency issued 3,181 regulatory notices to property owners and conducted 822 compliance inspections, sealing 439 sites for failing to meet regulatory directives.

The agency has introduced a mandatory three-stage testing process for construction materials and established a private laboratory accreditation program. Additionally, a whistleblower mechanism has been set up to encourage residents to report suspicious construction activities, with investigations initiated within 48 hours of reports.
