Lagos Orders Demolition After Alakija Building Collapse

The Lagos State Government has mandated the demolition of defective structures in response to a tragic building collapse in the Alakija area, which occurred recently. The incident resulted in the loss of nine lives, while 27 individuals were rescued from the rubble.

Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, conveyed the government's condolences to the families affected and emphasized the need for safety. He stated that the government would investigate the collapse and prosecute anyone found responsible.

Omotoso condemned the practice of occupying buildings beneath high-tension power lines and warned residents against ignoring evacuation notices. He noted that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and other emergency responders worked tirelessly throughout the night to manage the situation.

The government aims to prevent similar tragedies by taking immediate action against identified defective structures and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
