Lagos State Enhances Drug Access in Health Insurance Scheme

The Lagos State government has initiated a review of its drug access program to enhance the availability of essential medicines for residents enrolled in the Ilera Eko health insurance scheme. This program, introduced in April 2024, aims to address ongoing complaints from enrollees regarding drug shortages and incomplete dispensations at healthcare facilities.

Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), emphasized that the initiative is a strategic intervention to ensure that enrollees receive complete and timely pharmaceutical care.

The agency plans to engage an independent consultant over six months to assess the program's performance and gather user feedback. Ibrahim Ahm from the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria commended the initiative, describing it as a step toward improving pharmaceutical access.

The program is part of Lagos State's commitment to healthcare reform and aims to lead in healthcare innovation and universal health coverage in Nigeria.
