Lagos State University Workers Launch Indefinite Strike

Lagos State University Workers Launch Indefinite Strike

Teaching and non-teaching staff of Lagos State government-owned universities have commenced an indefinite strike due to unmet demands and the state government's alleged failure to implement agreements with the unions. The strike was announced by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Workers of Lagos State-owned Universities during a press briefing.

The unions involved include the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions (NASU). The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), and Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).

JAC chairman, Prof Ibraheem Bakare, stated that the workers had shown patience and commitment to dialogue but were compelled to strike after exhausting all administrative channels. Their demands include the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria/unions agreement, a one-off payment of nine months’ accumulated arrears, adherence to negotiated allowances, and a 15 percent “Lagos Factor” allowance.

They also seek a 20 percent salary increase pledged in 2023 and the provision of five Marcopolo buses for transportation. Bakare emphasized that the unions would not resume work unless all demands were met.
