ASUU Launches Indefinite Strike at Over 20 Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced an indefinite strike on August 26, 2026, impacting more than 20 state-owned universities across Nigeria. This action follows a directive from the union's national leadership in response to the non-implementation of salary provisions under the 2009 Re-negotiated Agreement and the failure of state governments to pay salary arrears owed since January 2026.

Affected institutions include Nasarawa State University, Gombe State University, and Ambrose Alli University, among others. Prof. Bolu Oshodi, branch chairman at Adekunle Ajasin University, stated that the strike would persist until members receive payment alerts for the owed salaries.

He noted that while some universities had begun implementing the new salary structure, the government had not committed to clearing all outstanding arrears. The strike's demands include the establishment of a Contributory Pension Scheme and the payment of 22 months' arrears.

The strike was declared after an ultimatum expired without satisfactory response from the government.
