LASEPA Advocates for Enhanced Coordination in Oil and Gas Sector

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) emphasized the need for closer coordination among environmental, physical planning, and petroleum regulators to enhance compliance in the oil and gas sector. This call was made during an Oil and Gas Stakeholders’ Forum held at the Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry Conference and Exhibition Centre in Ikeja.
The forum's theme was “Strengthening Regulatory Compliance through Stakeholders’ Collaboration in the Oil and Gas Sector.” Olakunle Akodu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, highlighted that while the sector contributes to economic development, it also carries significant environmental responsibilities. He pointed out issues such as emissions, waste management, and noise pollution that require attention.
Akodu stated that the government aims to work collaboratively with industry operators to promote responsible operations. Dr Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, noted that effective environmental management requires active participation from stakeholders, moving beyond mere enforcement.
Adebola Shabi, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, also stressed the importance of collaboration among various ministries.
