LASERC Identifies Electricity Supply Bottlenecks in Lagos

The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) has identified bottlenecks between the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Distribution Companies (DisCos) that restrict electricity supply to consumers in Lagos. This finding emerged during a monitoring and fact-finding tour of TCN facilities, including the Akangba and Ijora substations, prompted by reports of 200 megawatts (MW) of electricity not reaching consumers.
Engr. Adekunle Olapade, LASERC’s Executive Member for Engineering and Standards, stated that both TCN and DisCos possess the capacity to transmit and absorb additional electricity. However, challenges related to distribution infrastructure and system protection need to be addressed.
TCN has also raised concerns about frequent tripping during the rainy season. LASERC emphasized the necessity for increased investment in distribution infrastructure to enhance electricity delivery.
The commission anticipates improvements in electricity supply as stakeholders collaborate to resolve these bottlenecks. LASERC plans to pilot 24/7 electricity franchise zones in Lagos by October 2026 as part of its Short-Term Regulatory Agenda.
