Lagos State Implements Stricter High-Rise Safety Standards

The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to enhance safety standards for high-rise buildings, calling on facility managers, developers, and safety professionals to integrate safety considerations into building design, operations, and maintenance. This initiative was announced during a stakeholders’ forum organized by the Lagos State Safety Commission, themed “Safe Building, Protected Workforce.” Director-General Lanre Mojola emphasized the necessity of incorporating facility management and safety planning from the design phase to prevent rapid deterioration of newly constructed buildings due to poor maintenance.

He stated that safety is crucial for protecting lives and maintaining public trust. Mojola advocated for mandatory safety training and certification for facility managers, highlighting the importance of safeguarding workers engaged in high-risk activities.

Technical Adviser Seun Awojobi noted that the engagement aimed to develop practical solutions for construction safety and occupational health, especially as Lagos continues to expand as a major economic hub with increasing high-rise developments.
